ALSC Wins Masonry Design Awards
On Thursday, November 20th, the Masonry Industry Promotions Group held its 2008 Design Awards program. 25 projects were submitted by Architects and Masonry Contractors from the Spokane region.
The jury recognized five projects with Design Awards. ALSC Architects was recognized for two projects; Ridgeview Elementary School in Spokane and Senior Hall at Eastern Washington University.
Senior Hall received a Merit Award. The project consisted of doubling the size of the existing structure through a significant expansion of classrooms and support space and renovation of the entire existing building including complete infrastructure replacement. Existing masonry was cleaned and repointed where necessary, and the metal cap flashing and trim was replicated and replaced. Care was taken on the exterior to respect, but not replicate, the existing masonry fenestration and to create a unified design that integrates the old and the new but distinguishes between the two.
Ridgeview Elementary School was the winner of the Best on the Block Award. This new 48,500 square foot school replaced a cramped, aging school and its numerous portable additions. CMU was an economical choice from a labor and material standpoint; providing the color and texture of brick and the economic advantages of concrete block. Smooth-face, ground-face and split-face blocks were utilized in shades of burgundy, charcoal, khaki and gray to create playful and multi-textured walls. The CMU used in the gymnasium and multi-purpose room is reinforced structural units. Load-bearing masonry was used in these spaces to address issues related to surface durability, structural stability and life safety.
