This project involved a major reorganization and expansion of the primary shopping complex at McChord Air Force Base. The largest AAFES shopping center in the Continental United States, this 260,000 square foot facility is located in the retail core of McChord AFB, adjacent to the existing Commissary building and banking services.
A gable entry form relates to surrounding architecture and provides entry identity for the Shopping Center. The timber structure creates a uniquely refined Northwest feel, and large expanses of glass provide views into and out of this important retail center.
Masonry, metal panels and glazing are the primary exterior finish materials, matching the existing building and creating a seamless shopping center fitting with its context. Inside, a glass clerestory extends the full length of the mall to introduce natural daylight, reduce energy costs and create an inviting retail space.
