Volkar Center for Athletic Achievement, Gonzaga University

The 51,240 square foot Volkar Center for Athletic Achievement was designed to help student-athletes succeed in competition, in the classroom and in the community. The $24 million facility houses student athlete support services, weight room, nutrition center, basketball practice court, Athletics Hall of Fame, offices and meeting areas. Combined with spaces in the adjacent Charlotte Y. Martin Centre and McCarthey Athletic Center, the building provides Gonzaga's student athletes with among the finest facilities and support services in the nation.

Northern Quest Resort & Casino Expansion

ALSC provided architectural and interior design services for this $20 million expansion of Northern Quest Resort & Casino. The expansion includes Kids Quest and Cyber Quest, a day care/entertainment center and family friendly arcade, additions to the food court and Windfall, a new retail store featuring a variety of outdoor recreational items, home and sporting goods and more.

When planning new recreation centers, the types and number of pools need to be carefully taken into consideration. Different activities and water sports require different pool shapes and have different regulations. 

This May 2017 blog post from Athletic Business discusses the advantages and the growing trend of aquatic training:

“Besides the novelty of a new location and a new challenge, some instructors attribute the growing popularity to the restorative power of water on aching joints and sore muscles.

Virtual Reality in Building Design

ALSC incorporates virtual technology into our design process to give clients better visualization of future building projects.

Wearing virtual reality goggles, someone using 3-D technology can step into the middle of a North Pines Middle School common space that doesn’t exist yet.

With the same goggle headset, the person with a head tilt or circular movement can get a panorama view of that school space designed by ALSC Architects PS, of Spokane. Just over a year ago, the firm began incorporating more virtual technology into its design work to give clients better visualization of future building projects.

Spokane Teachers Credit Union (STCU) and Rocket Bakery share this two-story, 3,300 square foot space adjacent to Urban Outfitters in downtown Spokane. The design reflects a unique partnership and required thoughtful planning since STCU and Rocket Bakery operate on different schedules.

Fitness Facilities: It's All in the Family!

More and more athletic and fitness facilities are embracing an “all in the family” mentality when it comes to programming spaces, activities and staff into their business plans and buildings to ensure that there are activities for people of all ages.  However, some States grant exemptions to fitness facilities offering short term child care from needing to comply with Child Care Licensing Rules and Regulations. 

 "Fitness Facilities: It's All in the Family" explores design attributes that should be present in an infant through elementary school age child watch area of a fitness facility.
